The “summer slide” is a notably researched topic that looks into the trends and prevention of losing educational ground in children over the summer break. One study by the NWEA found that 3rd graders lose an average of 24% of their school-year gains in reading and math. By middle school, this number increases to a 36% loss in reading and a 50% loss in math!
While sending homework home for the summer is impractical, having a list of fun, engaging, AND educational activities that the whole family can do together can make a huge difference.
To continue learning over the summer, each of my students went home with their very own Summer STEM Bucket List! The list was included in inexpensive sand buckets and a few other goodies to extend the fun. I also added mini foam rockets and challenged my students to make a better design that they can launch with the included launcher.
The labels on the buckets were made by taking pictures of my students using the free NASA selfie app and printing them on adhesive paper. We spend a good amount of time talking about STEM careers in my classroom (Check out this STEM Careers Bingo game). The students love seeing themselves as Astronauts. It has a magical affect that gives them confidence to tackle STEM challenges!
