STEM Innovators Storyline (Adaptable for Grades 3 - 5): Agents, your mission begins now. The world’s top spy agency has recruited the brightest minds for a series of top-secret operations. Your task: design and engineer cutting-edge spy gadgets to crack codes, outsmart villains, and save the day. Succeed, and you’ll rise through the ranks to become an elite STEM Innovator, trusted with the world’s most classified missions.
This bundle contains our new 5th Grade STEM Innovators series - your students are on a mission to design, build, and engineer simple machines and propel their spy to success!
Lessons Included in this Bundle:
Energy 5E Balloon Sled Inquiry and Design Challenge - Operation: Quick Getaway In this unit, students will learn about common energy. Students will complete mini labs about friction and surface area to fuel their curiosity. They will then design and build their own balloon sled to help their spy make a quick getaway!
Levers - Operation: Secret Lever Students begin by exploring how levers work through interactive mini-labs, experimenting with different fulcrum positions and observing how these changes affect force and motion. Using what they learn, students then design, build, test, and improve their own candy grabbers.
Pulleys - Operation: Silent Descent Students begin by learning how pulleys work and learning about mechanical advantage. Using what they learn, students then design, build, test, and improve their own pulley system.
Wedges - Operation: Split and Slip Students will learn about common characteristics of wedges and their various uses. Students will complete mini labs with wedges to spark their curiosity. They will then design and build their own wedge to help their spy retrieve a clue trapped between two objects!
Screws - Operation: Propeller Power Students will learn about screws and design their screw propeller to attach to their boat to deliver the secret message. Through testing and data collection, they evaluate how well their designs function and make evidence-based improvements, just like real engineers!
Wheel and Axle - Operation: Wind Rider Students will first investigate how wheels and axles work through a fun lab activity, discovering how they reduce friction and make work easier. Then, they will apply their knowledge to design and test different wheel prototypes, ultimately building a sail car and racing it to see which design performs best!
